The short answer
If the blocker was a paywall or a sign-up prompt on an everyday task, PDFZivo will do that job for free in the browser, for guests, with the file deleted afterwards. If you already pay for a suite you like and it does what you need, switching buys you nothing.

What people actually mean by "an alternative"
Almost nobody wants a new PDF product. They want one specific task finished: a file small enough for an upload form, three documents merged before a deadline, a scan that can be searched, a page rotated the right way up.
That matters because it changes what you should compare. Feature-count tables are close to useless when your real requirement is "finish this in the next two minutes, on this phone, without making an account". The useful questions are narrower: can I start immediately, is the free tier real or a trial, what happens to my file afterwards, and does it handle the awkward version of my task — a scanned page, an exact size limit, twenty files instead of one.
The everyday jobs, and how they work here
Merge, split, rotate, reorder, compress, protect and unlock, plus conversions in both directions between PDF and Word, Excel, PowerPoint, JPG and PNG — these run in the browser with no account. You pick the file, the tool runs, you download the result.
Compression is worth calling out because it is where most "it did not work" moments happen. Asking for a smaller file is not the same as needing one under 100 KB for a government portal. The compressor here takes a target size and tells you honestly whether it hit it, instead of returning something 40 percent smaller and leaving you to discover the difference at the upload screen.
Scans are the other common wall. If your PDF is a photograph of a page, most tools will happily convert it and hand you a document with no selectable text. OCR here is free for everyone, guests included, within per-plan limits — so a scanned page becomes searchable text rather than an image in a wrapper.
What it costs, stated plainly
The free tier is free with fair daily limits, not a countdown to a card form. OCR is free for everyone. Paid plans exist for people who hit those daily limits, want batch processing, or need larger uploads.
AI tools are the one place with a different meter, and it is worth understanding before you rely on it: they consume AI Credit rather than sitting inside the flat limits. A signed-in free account gets 50 AI Credit a month, guests get none, and paid plans include more. That is a real constraint, not a marketing tier — we would rather state it here than let you discover it halfway through a task.
What happens to your files
PDFZivo is not file storage. Uploads and their results are temporary and are deleted automatically — there is no library of your documents accumulating on our servers, and no setting to make one.
That is a genuine trade-off rather than a pure win. If you want your documents to live somewhere and sync between devices, you want a storage product and this is not one. If you want a document to pass through a tool and be gone, that is exactly what this is.
Where staying with what you have is the better choice
If you already pay for a suite, it does the job, and the cost is not the problem, there is no argument here — switching tools has a real cost in habit and muscle memory, and "free" does not repay it.
The same applies if your workflow depends on integrations with the rest of your stack, on desktop or mobile apps you use offline, or on a support contract someone in procurement signed. A browser-based tool that deletes your files afterwards is a poor fit for a workflow built on an always-available synced library. Be honest about which of those describes you before you move.
Trying it without committing to anything
There is nothing to install and no account required for the everyday tools, so the fastest evaluation is to take the actual file that prompted the search and run the actual task, rather than reading further.
If it works, nothing else needs to change: bookmark the tool page you used. If it does not, you have lost a minute and no data — the file is deleted either way.
